Kingsley Obiora - Shaping Economic and Financial Policy Across Africa
Kingsley Obiora is an economist, central banker, and public policy expert whose career has spanned some of the world's most influential financial institutions. Possessing leadership experience at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kingsley Obiora has played a key role in shaping economic policies, advancing financial innovation, and promoting institutional development across Africa.
Kingsley Obiora’s international career gained momentum when he joined the IMF as an economist in 2007. During his time at the IMF, he analyzed economic trends and provided policy recommendations for countries such as Lithuania and The Gambia.
In 2018, Dr. Obiora returned to the IMF as alternate executive director, representing the interests of 23 African countries on the IMF Executive Board. In this position, he reviewed and approved IMF Board documents and participated in program negotiations and surveillance missions across more than 50 countries.
Between 2020 and 2023, he served as deputy governor of economic policy at the Central Bank of Nigeria. He designed and implemented strategic initiatives, including the launch of Africa's first central bank digital currency, the eNaira. He also chaired the boards of several major institutions, including the Africa Finance Corporation and FMDQ Group, helping drive significant institutional growth and operational transformation.
